Traditional methods of pastel painting is done by painting on white or light coloured pastel paper. With this method you would use the darker colours to create shadows and produce a 3 dimensional effect, etc. However, when using black paper, you are working in reverse, where you bring the lighter colours to create highlights and the 3 dimensional appearance. This is very challenging, but could be very effective, especially when painting a black and white portrait. Here is an example.
