The binder of oil paint is linseed oil (or another drying oil), whereas acrylic paint has water as the vehicle for the thinning the acrylic polymer, which serves as the binder. Thus, OIL paint is said to be “oil-based”, whereas ACRYLIC paint is “water-based”. However, when completely dry, both mediums have similar properties, which are durable and long lasting and maintain their brilliance.
I personally prefer working with acrylic paints rather than oils, primarily due to the strong odour associated with oil paints and their significantly longer drying time. Depending on the application, oil paint can take several days to dry sufficiently before another layer can be applied, whereas acrylics allow for a more efficient and flexible painting process.
